Minutes
31st
October 2003 - Sixteenth Meeting
-
It
was reported that there were 143 victims of vCJD as at 6 October
2003, according to the figures on the Department of Health's
website.
-
There
was discussion about Irwin Mitchell's representations that
the services of a professional Trustee would be required in
all cases where payments are made to a minor.
-
The
Trustees considered whether it would be beneficial for an
article prepared by one of the Trustees that had been published
some months ago to be re-published. It was recognised that
the publication of articles in the medical press may have
the beneficial result of alerting the medical profession to
the possible diagnosis of vCJD.
-
The
importance of the Trustees being provided with details of
the victim's relatives was reiterated. This is to ensure that
compensation is distributed in a fair and just manner, and
in accordance with the Trust Deed.
-
There
was discussion about the small number of claims that have
been submitted for psychiatric condition that has given rise
to particular financial or emotional hardship. The principles
that the Trustees will adopt should be resolved shortly, and
may need further consideration after representations for further
funding have been made to the Secretary of State.
-
The
Trustees considered 6 new claims, 6 claims with outstanding
issues and claims by family members of 14 victims for the
single sum of £5,000 for psychiatric injury lasting
longer than a calendar month that has been caused or materially
aggravated by the fact that the victim has contracted vCJD.
